For more than 30 years, poet, writer and activist Nikki Giovanni has been one of the most profound, galvanizing and luminous voices in American letters. Emerging during the Civil Rights, Black Power and Black Arts movements in the late 1960s with her revolutionary first book Black Feeling, Black Talk, Giovanni quickly took her place as one of the most influential poets of the era, admired for her fiery outspokenness and empowering meditations on topics ranging from the political to the intensely personal. Described as vibrant and playful, bluesy and incisive, Giovanni's poems explore the complexity and contradictions that make up the American consciousness. Her most recent volume of poetry, Quilting the Black-Eyed Pea, won the NAACP Image Award in 2003. A forbearer of the present-day poetry slam and spoken word craze, Giovanni is an immensely inspiring and charismatic speaker, earning a 2003 Grammy nomination for her spoken word CD The Nikki Giovanni Poetry Collection. 3/12 The Spelman College Glee Club West Coast Tour
'50 Moore Productions' will present the highly renowned Spelman College Glee Club on Friday, March 11th at 7:00 p.m. at the Los Angeles Baha'i Center as an extended conclusion of Black History Month. It has been 30 years since the Glee Club has performed on the West Coast, as part of the closing festivities of Black History Month and to conclude their 2004-2005 tour, they will perform on Friday, March 11 and then travel to Northern California with performances in San Francisco, Oakland and Richmond, California. Unity Players Ensemble is proud to present A Black Trilogy 2005: Three More One-Act Plays from the Avant-Garde. This year's theme: Visions from the Past. The three plays are: "The Prisoner of St. Pierre" by Pat Gabridge, "The Taking Circle" by P.J. Gibson and "Up and Gone Again" by Bill Harris. UPE Artistic Director Spencer Scott directs. Black Trilogy 2005 will Preview at The Stella Adler Theatre on Thursday February 17, at 8:00pm, and will Premiere Friday February 18 (Opening Night and reception)and run thru March 13, 2005. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00pm and Sundays at 3:00pm. Note: There will be no performances on Sunday February 27 or March 6.
