Boeing employee wins anti-discrimination suit
The Associated Press
LOS ANGELES (AP) - A jury on Friday recommended $700,000 to a Boeing satellite company employee who was fired after complaining about racial discrimination by his supervisor.
Geoffrey Gibbs, a black attorney who attended Harvard and received a Rhodes Scholarship, joined El Segundo-based Boeing Satellite Systems Inc. in 1996. He later was demoted to a position below his entry-level slot.
"We are pleased with the verdict that tells big business that discrimination in the workplace will not be tolerated," attorney Wilmer Harris said.
A call left for Boeing late Friday was not immediately returned.
After complaining about race discrimination, Gibbs was denied any other position and was fired in September 2001. Gibbs sued the company in July 2002 in Superior Court. The jury recommended $600,000 in damages resulting from the termination and $100,000 in punitive damages.
